Configuring Restarts

This Article Applies to:

  • Business Hub

You can control when your end devices automatically restart to apply updates and patches in Policies.

If you want to control restart options for your devices, you must use the Hub, as neither the On-Premise Console nor local clients have these options.

In the policy you would like to edit, click the General Settings tab. Then expand the Restart Options section.

Often, patches and updates require devices to be restarted after installation. When you install patches using policies, you can tell devices to restart and control when that restart begins. If patches are installed but those patches don’t require a restart, the devices won’t be restarted. For automatic restarts, you can choose from the following options:

  • Restart only when needed by the service: A restart will occur when a major update or patch is deployed that requires a restart. A message about the upcoming restart will show to the endpoint user 10 minutes before the restart.
  • Force restart automatically: A restart will occur any time a patch or program update is executed. A message about the upcoming restart will show to the endpoint user 60 minutes before the restart.
  • Restart when user logs off: If no user is logged in to the end device, it will restart automatically if needed.
  • Do not restart: You will have to restart manually either from the console or on a physical endpoint device. No restart will occur. This could affect future patch or update deployments if there is a restart pending on the Windows operating system.
